The Casting Process:

MAKING THE MOLD
To make the mold we use a material called alginate. Alginate is derived from seaweed and is very safe on the skin. This is the same material dentists use to take molds of your teeth.

First the alginate is mixed from a powder until it resembles thick pancake mix, or thick yogurt.

Next the hand or foot  is dipped into the alginate and held there until the material sets into a gel (approximately 30 seconds to 1 minute).

Once the hand or foot is removed from the alginate, it can be rinsed in water to remove any alginate remnants from the skin.

MAKING THE CAST
A plaster /gypsum mix is now poured into the mold and left to set.

Once the mix is set, the alginate mold is cut away to reveal the cast.

The cast is carefully cleaned up and detailed.

Once fully dry, the cast is treated with a finish of your choice, and a clear sealer is applied.
